Burgerz - Travis Alabanza (UK)

WINNER TOTAL THEATRE AWARDS 2019
SHORTLISTED FOR THE CAROL TAMBOR BEST OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Hurled words. Thrown objects. Dodged Burgers.

After someone threw a burger at them and shouted a transphobic slur, performance artist Travis Alabanza became obsessed with burgers. How they’re made, how they feel, and smell. How they travel through the air. How the mayonnaise feels on your skin. This show is the climax of their obsession – exploring how trans bodies survive and how, by them reclaiming an act of violence, we can address our own complicity.

Carving out a place for themselves as one of the UK’s prominent trans voices, Alabanza presents a performance that is timely, unsettling and powerful

Film: Burgerz and Chips with Travis Alabanza - video below

In April 2016 someone threw a burger at Travis Alabanza on Waterloo Bridge and shouted a transphobic slur. Over a hundred people saw the incident but did nothing. This event led to the creation of their award winning theatre show BURGERZ which has been touring internationally since 2018. Alongside to the show Travis hosts Tranz Talkz dinners for queer people to discuss public harassment. In this film Travis invites three black trans artists to share food and discuss their experiences of working in the arts.
